When Others Ask

Posted by fasd101 on August 21, 2013 at 12:00 AM

Have you ever told anyone that your child suffers from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome? Did you get a blank look or the question "what is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?"

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)  IS  organic brain damage.  If we are to understand and explain it that way instead of the label of FASD, then maybe we can more easily explain it to others.

I am not saying don't use the terms of FAS, but what I am saying is maybe if we start the conversaion off with "my child has organic brain damage" then maybe others will be more apt to listen and understand.

Keep spreading awareness.

This disability is 100% preventable. Together, we can eliminate it!

Good point Darlene.
I am glad you have been able to open up conversation about what FAS is and educate people. I too tell others the same thing you mentioned. But people still don't seem to understand. It's when I mention "organic brain damage, or brain damage" that they seem to understand better. My hope is that the terms would be used together in a conversation explaining about FASD.
Thanks for the heads up about the term "organic brain damage", I will keep that in mind.

Hey Nora,

But, do people really understand "organic brain damage". I have an FAS son and had to look that term up myself to try and understand. I find it more difficult to explain organic brain damage, than to say my son's birth mom drank alcohol and now he has a broken brain. There are usually questions that follow!!
